Each year, I try to plan a photography experience that will get me psyched for the coming wedding season. Last year, that trip was visiting Iceland with one of my best friends. To say we had fun, would be an understatement!
We visited the country for 2 weeks over May and June. It was a short, but very packed trip! We started our trip in Reykjavik, the capital city of Iceland, before venturing out on the loop road that covers the majority of the country. We rented ourselves a great little camper van from KuKu Campers, gassed it up and started our journey towards the south of Iceland making our way along the beautiful coast line.
I have so many highlights from the south! From the Golden Circle, incredible waterfalls (my favorite being Selandjafoss), Dyrholaey, Vik, fields upon fields of Arctic Lupines, getting to take in the beauty of Jökulsárlón (a glacial lake surrounded by glaciers, mountains and the Atlantic ocean) and hot springs, oh the hot springs... :) Needless to say, it was more than enough to keep two photographers on their toes!
Once we left the south, we started making our way around the rest of the loop road fairly quickly. Time was running out to see the rest of this great country, and we were keen to take in as much of it as we could. We thoroughly enjoyed taking in the sites and remote feel of the eastern Fiords. We came across some very interesting dwellings, and met some truly memorable characters in Seyðisfjörður. So glad we left the loop road to explore this area and other part of the Eastern fjords. Oh, and Puffins! We finally got to see and watch them dart in and out of this rich, lush area of sea cliffs along the coastline. They are pretty adorable to observe!
I would have to say my next highlight would be taking in the surreal, volcanic landscapes of Mývatn. It was a pretty amazing experience getting to hike past bubbling hot pools of lava, and witness the earth exploding with steam every few minutes. It felt very prehistoric, and kind of unnerving to be treading on such active terrain.
When we wound our way around to Akureyri, in the north of Iceland, we were more than ready to experience a unique city feel with great cafes and delicious cuisine. Akureyri is the next largest city in Iceland, and did not fail to provide a sense of character and comfort. From there, we made our way towards the western fjords to finish our journey. Our last evening was met with a beautiful, warm sunset, an amazing camp cooked meal, and great conversations regarding our next venture around the globe. We both felt a great sense of contentment with our journey in Iceland, and for where we were in life. Expect another adventure from us two! We have been dreaming and scheming ever since that evening...
Here are a collection of my favorite images, and moments from our time in this incredibly beautiful country. I highly recommend visiting the magic of Iceland and taking in it's incredibly beautiful scenery, people and customs they are rich with. I hope you all enjoy the photos!
