My Favourite Photos from 2018 - The Canadian Rockies and Beyond

2018 was a great, big, beautiful year. One I will never forget. This has been a great year for documenting weddings, elopements and couples who felt like a lovely match to the style I use to photograph connections and people in love. I feel humbled and incredibly blessed by all of the people I got to work with in Canada and abroad. My gratitude for your trust when documenting an intimate moment runs deep, and leaves me ever fulfilled to be on this path with photography. Thank you for sharing such a lovely space to create from.

Getting to visit Ireland and photograph my first destination wedding would be another highlight for the year. I can not wait to share this wedding! You’ll find a healthy selection of images from this wedding mid pack below. Between this amazing wedding, and the 29 other incredible weddings that took place all over the Rockies, I will be delightfully busy updating my blog with this years, and last years (2017) weddings. It will be great to share some fresh, new work.

Another major highlight for the year was getting to travel more. Getting to visit Tofino, Ireland, New York, and then San Francisco were all places I have longed to visit. I have shared a couple photos from some of these places below, and plan to do more personal photography projects that may make an appearance on this site in the future.

With this being the most full year I have had in the past 6 years of business, a lot of important aspects of life were left a bit short. As much as I love this path, I also love life and the ever present pursuit of a work life balance that provides enough rest to really dig deep and keep pushing myself as an artist. This year, I will be making a significant goal to attain that balance and level out how much I work vs how much I live and create for me. 2019 is still a full year, one I am very excited to be a part of. I am equally excited to explore inviting time with friends & family, outdoor recreation, creative personal projects, and above all else ~ time for self care to come back into the picture. We are all deserving of taking great care of ourselves in any capacity we can create. The idea is to create it from a place of worthiness.

Another major goal, one I have been building towards for a couple years now, is to do a full and complete rebrand of my business. I am excited to get started on a fresh new look for my website, blog, and new, exciting options for couples hiring me for the coming years. With all of the busyness mentioned above, there are nearly 60 weddings that only a few photos have been shared from each on social media. It will be great to have the time to thoughtfully share some of my favourite work from the past two years.

Thank you so much for taking the time to pop by and see some of my favourite images from the past year. I apologize for the quantity, I wanted to dabble a few personal photos throughout. I am so excited to invite new experiences to come in 2019, both professionally and personally. I am sending you all a warm, heartfelt wish for a wonderful and fulfilling year ahead. Thank you so very much for your support!

Much love,

Jody

Jess and Cameron | Lake Louise Elopement | Lake Louise, AB Wedding

I love intimate weddings in inclimate weather. So moody, beautiful and dramatic. Add in a little Lake Louise magic and you've got one beautiful Elopement!

I loved getting to photograph this elopement. Between the calmness of Lake Louise, the snow and rain that gently fell and the loving notions that flowed with ease between Jess and Cameron, all of it was wonderful to photograph. Here are my favourite photos from their lovely elopement at Chateau Lake Louise, followed by a portrait session along Emerald Lake road.

Thank you for bringing me along to capture your elopement, Jess and Cameron! xo

Liz and Cassandra | Camp Chief Hector Wedding | Kananaskis Country, Alberta

How do I even begin to speak about my amazing experience working with these two wonderful women? From our first conversation, I knew I was in for not only a great experience, but a lasting one. Liz and Cassandra are one of kind type of people. They are passionate about each other and life, they come from the heart and they know how to have a good time. When I first met with Liz to learn about her wedding, I knew almost instantly I wanted to be a part of their day. She shared visions of games, celebrations, playful events that surrounded their day, and a lot of fun, relaxed vibes with their family/friends at Camp Chief Hector. Not only did they deliver, they went above and beyond.

Their wedding took place on a crisp fall day in October of 2016. The weather had a lot of snow and rain in the forecast, but none of it came to pass. Their day was sunny, warm and full of light, fun vibes. I really can not choose one aspect of their day that was a favourite. Their  whole day, and the time we worked together has been very memorable and special to me. Today, they are so much more than clients to me, they are friends.

Here are my favourite images from their winter engagement session along hwy 93 north, and their incredible wedding at Camp Chief Hector. Liz and Cassandra, it was beyond a gift to work with you both. I am so glad we met. Every time I look at the photos we made together it leaves me warm and smiling. I know you two will make it through anything life throws at you. It was honour to be a part of this time in your lives.

Liz and Cassandra were kind enough to share a testimonial of their time with me. Thank you so much for your words!

"When my wife and I got engaged we sat down and discussed what we were unwilling to compromise on and mutually agreed that photos are the most important thing as that is what you get to keep and cherish forever (second only to each other of course). After pouring through literally thousands of photos and hundreds of photographers we decided on the incomparable Jody Goodwin. She is an expert at capturing the breathtaking beauty of nature and has an incredible eye for candid moments and catching pure joy on film.

From the moment we first spoke with Jody we knew we had made the right decision. She truly loves what she does and cares an incredible amount for the people she works with. Jody is one of the most kind, talented, genuine human beings we have ever met and we felt comfortable working with her immediately. She exudes excitement, love and light that creates an infectious atmosphere of fun that makes being photographed feel effortless. My wife and I don't typically love having our picture taken but I mean it when I say we would happily have Jody take our picture any day!

Our wedding day was full of chaos due to an enormous bridal party and being surrounded by an incredible team of people working to get all of us ready so I didn't think I would have many getting ready photos (which I was okay with) but somehow Jody swept in and made the chaos look like calm and managed to catch so many beautiful moments that we will cherish for years to come. While looking at our photos we were overwhelmed with emotion as our wedding day memories came flooding back because every single photo is dripping with our personalities, is filled with the people we love and moments we didn't even realize she was there for. She even caught me ugly crying during our wedding vows (trust me...it was bad haha) and managed to make it look pretty! Now THAT is worth it's weight in gold.

We couldn't be more thankful that we met Jody and have her in our lives. We have received endless compliments on our photos and have had numerous friends tell us they wish they had found her for theirs. If there is one thing you can splurge on for your wedding and know that you will never regret it, it's Jody Goodwin Photography. Not only will you have the gift of breathtaking images from the happiest day of your life but you will likely gain a new friend as a bonus. BEST. PHOTOGRAPHER. EVER." ~ Liz and Cassandra

Darren and Katie | Buffalo Mountain Lodge Wedding | Banff, Alberta

There are not enough words to express how much I enjoyed my time with this beautiful couple. Katie and Darren are two of the most kind, considerate and loveable people you could ever be fortunate to meet. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with them from our winter engagement session at Lake Louise and Emerald Lake, to their beautiful summer wedding at Buffalo Mountain Lodge

To start us off, I wanted to share some photos from our engagement session that took place at Lake Louise and Emerald Lake. We could have asked for better winter conditions. The sun was warm and inviting while we strolled Lake Louise, and Emerald Lake. These two soaked up the rays, each other and the incredibly beautiful mountain scenery we wandered in.

Their wedding day had a slightly different tone to it. We had rain, sun, moody skies and a whole lot of surprises throughout the day. The first surprise came when it started to pour rain just as  their ceremony was about to begin, and came to a full stop as they started sharing their beautiful vows to each other. The sun came out through the clouds and blessed them with some truly beautiful light as they exchanged their rings. It was quite the experience to witness.

The rest of their wedding unfolded beautifully. From moody skies during their portrait session to emotional speeches during their reception, to one of the most lovely, choreographed first dances I have ever photographed. All of it was simply a pleasure to photograph.

I loved their wedding day and getting to work with them as a couple. I feel very fortunate to have met, and now call them friends today. I hope you enjoy my favourite frames my time with them. Katie and Darren, I wish you both as much joy, love and happiness you felt on your wedding day, all of the days that you share together. You two are perfect for each other! xo

They shared some truly lovely words from their time with my services:

"Hey Jody! Wow! We were absolutely amazed by the photos. All of them are spectacular and tell every detail of our day. Looking at them, we were instantly transported back to the day and were even reminded of the small moments we were too overwhelmed to notice the first time.  There is absolutely no way for us to put into words how appreciative we are of your hard work and pure talent. We are so lucky to have found you! It was such a pleasure working with someone as passionate and warm as you are. You were always able to make us feel comfortable being photographed and your laugh is so infectious that it was impossible not to smile with you around. Thank you for helping us immortalize the memories of our special day! We are really looking forward to sharing these with our family and friends! We know everyone will love them as much as we do. ~ Much love, Katie and Darren."

Kananaskis Country, Alberta ~ Elopement at Mount Engadine Lodge

The season of blogging is finally here! It is so nice to have the time to start sharing all of the wonderful weddings and engagement sessions I got to be a part of this past spring, summer and fall. This has been a great year for Jody Goodwin Photography!

To start of this years weddings, here is a sweet engagement session and elopement I had the pleasure of joining in Kananaskis country area this past May. Sara and Justin are both avid outdoors people who wanted a wedding and engagement session that reflected how they share their time in the mountains.

This lovely, earthy elopement was beautifully based at Mount Engadine Lodge along The Smith Dorrien highway in Kananskis country. If you have never had the chance to visit this gorgeous little nook in the mountains, you are missing out! It is quaint, cozy and the perfect place to host a small/intimate mountain wedding away from the hustle and bustle of cities.

I hope you enjoy this collection of images from both their engagement session, which also took place near Mount Engadine Lodge, and their wedding. I wish you both the very best, Sara and Justin. Thank you for bringing me along to capture your love of the mountains, nature and each other. xo

Mount Norquay Ski Resort Wedding | Banff Wedding Photography | Banff National Park Wedding

What a pleasure it was to work with Jared and Chandra for their wedding in Banff, Alberta. To say this wedding was of Olympic proportions would be an understatement. Jared and Chandra made sure the day flowed absolutely flawlessly. From choosing the elegant Paintbox Lodge in Canmore as their getting ready/accommodations site, to a beautiful ceremony and reception held at Mount Norquay Ski Resort in Banff. The day was really beautiful.

The weather on this particular weekend was quite tricky, however. We had everything from rain, snow, and sunshine. A very typical Canadian Rockies day! I'm sure it is of no surprise to those who know the couple, they handled it with style, grace and sense of adventure. We took advantage of the gondola at Mount Norquay and did some snowy bride/groom portraits up high. I was more than happy to oblige!

When it came to celebrating the union of this incredible power couple, the night was full of great moments. Killer dance moves, Giant Jenga (in use to make the couple kiss), a choreographed dance performance by the wedding party and an extremely well done video curated by the bride's father. All of this adds up to a very memorable, special and beautiful wedding to photograph.

Deepest gratitude to Chandra and Jared for bringing me along to capture their momentous wedding day. I wish you both so much love, light and promise for the years I know you will cherish together. You two are so perfect for each other. Also, many well wishes for the next exciting chapter you two are about to enter. I can not wait to capture another beautiful milestone in your lives this coming fall. Many blessing to you both! xo

Alpine Engagement Session | Kananaskis Country, AB

I loved this summer engagement session with Brendan and Basia so much! They were such a treat to work with! When we'd first started talking about engagement photos, we were really keen to go up in the mountains for a session to showcase their love of the Canadian Rockies. We waited for a good weather window, and wandered up into the alpine of Kananaskis country, Alberta, to enjoy a sunset engagement session amongst the beautiful peaks.

The evening was perfect. Little to no wind, warm temperatures and incredible views at every turn. We were all very pleased, especially the dog! I love winter very much, but these summery engagement photos have me craving the warmth of the sun, and the opportunity to get up high in the mountains to do more of this style of engagement photos. I love adventurous souls!

Super excited to work with these two beautiful beings again this coming June for their mountain top wedding held at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort. I am super excited to photograph that gorgeous venue again, and get to work with Brendan and Basia for their very special date in the clouds. It will be great!

I hope you're all finding ways to play in the winter sun! Enjoy the photos! xo
